Embrace the Season with Stunning Winter Family Photos

Winter has a magical way of transforming the world into a serene, snow-kissed wonderland—perfect for capturing breathtaking family memories.

Whether it’s the soft glow of a golden sunset over a frost-covered field or the joyful laughter of little ones bundled up in cozy layers, winter family photos offer a timeless way to celebrate the season.

If the thought of chilly temps makes you hesitate, don’t worry! With the right preparation (and a little bit of warm cocoa afterward!), you can create stunning, joy-filled images that you’ll cherish for years to come.

Let’s dive into how to make the most of your winter photo session while keeping the experience stress-free, fun, and, of course, full of warmth!

Why Winter Is Perfect for Family Photos

Winter may not be the first season that comes to mind for family photos, but it’s actually one of the most magical times to capture heartfelt, timeless memories. The soft, diffused light of winter days creates a natural glow that flatters every skin tone—no harsh summer sun or squinting in your photos! Plus, the neutral tones of snow-covered landscapes or cozy, earth-toned backdrops help your family take center stage.

And let’s not forget the coziness factor! Winter sessions are all about embracing the season—think adorable knit hats, stylish layers, and those sweet, bundled-up hugs that radiate warmth.

Plus, winter family photos make the perfect gift for loved ones and a stunning addition to your holiday cards.

Creative Ideas for Winter Family Photos

Winter family photos lend themselves to a ton of opportunities–even more than you might have in other seasons! You and your family can get creative and make sure you have a great variety of candid and posed photos.

Here are some great ideas for your session:

  • Snowy adventures – Make the most of your winter family photos with playtime outdoors! Let the kids have fun with snowball fights, sledding, or even ice skating. You’ll love the photos of you all in action and the genuine reactions to having fun together.
  • Bundled up with a blanket – Get cozy! Laying out a blanket outside and just enjoying your time together will make for some great shots of your family. Especially if you have young kids or pets, you can capture organic moments together that will look great in photos.
  • Woodland setting – There’s such a magical look that nature has in the wintertime, so don’t discredit it for your winter family photos. A session at a tree farm or a park can make for a beautiful, natural background.
  • Lit-up magic – When you think of winter, you might think of twinkling lights and enchantment! Capture that in your photo session with a magical night-time shoot set near Christmas lights or using string lights to place around and near your family.
  • Classy comfort – If you love a simple look for family photos, you can focus on wearing a neutral color scheme. Set against a snowy background, your family will look classy yet still warm and comfortable.
  • Holidays at home – To really capture your family’s dynamic and love for each other, a home holiday session can be perfect! We can capture you baking cookies with the kids, cozied up by the fireplace, or decorating the tree.

Tips for a Successful Winter Family Photo Session

If you’re nervous about your photo session, don’t worry! Especially if we work together, you’ll be in good hands. I’ve worked with countless families to bring their favorite memories to life, and I can help you all feel comfortable.

Before your session, here are a few tips you can keep in mind to make sure everyone is happy and your photos turn out exactly how you want them.

Choose the right winter family photo outfits

Your winter family photo outfits are one of the most important parts of your shoot. After all, you don’t want to be too cold–especially if you have kids who can get a little fussy.

Dress for warmth and style by coordinating your family (not matching!). By choosing a color palette, you can still look cohesive and put together while still allowing everyone to choose the colors and outfits that look the best on them.

With colder weather, you can experiment more with layeting to add texture and dimension to your photos. Coats, scarves, sweats, and hats are all great options–just make sure you aren’t layering so much that your outfit becomes bulky.

Keep the session short and sweet

Especially if you choose outdoor photos for the wintertime, we don’t want you getting too cold. I recommend mini-sessions during the colder season or keeping full sessions between 20-45 minutes. That way, we can still get a ton of photos without anyone freezing!

Prioritize warmth and comfort

Before your shoot, consider packing anything that’ll help you and your family feel more comfortable. Here’s a quick list of items that could be good for you and the kids:

  • Snacks and drinks
  • Hand warmers
  • Blankets
  • Hot drinks in a thermos
  • Chapstick and moisturizer
  • Tissues

Choose the right time of day

The time of day is crucial to getting the types of photos you want, especially in the wintertime. I’ll help you choose the best time of day, but it’s helpful to think about your vision ahead of time too.

Golden hour right before the sunset is even softer and dreamier in the winter. But if it’s an especially cold time of year, late morning and early afternoon can be the warmest. If you want special lighting like Christmas lights, early evening may be the best choice to make sure the lights pop in your photos.

Overcoming Winter Photography Challenges

Winter photo sessions do come with their own challenges, but we can handle them all together. Through my experience, here are my tips for addressing the weather and all that comes with it:

  • Getting too cold – Especially if you have little ones, they can get cold quickly. That’s why it’s so important to find the winter family outfits that keep you warm, but we can also be sure to take quick breaks that let everyone find somewhere warm in between photos.
  • Dry, harsh weather – The dry winter weather can make noses cold and chap lips quickly, so I always recommend bringing chapstick and extra lotion. As for pink noses and red cheeks–embrace them! They add to the cozy winter charm.
  • Unexpected weather – Unexpected weather is always something we might have to deal with, no matter what season we’re in! In the winter, it might mean more snow. We can make anything work, even rain, so don’t worry too much. In fact, unexpected flurries can bring out true winter wonder in your photos!
  • Snow and ice – For an outdoor winter shoot, it is important to be mindful of snow and ice. Make sure your crew comes prepared with the right type of footwear to make sure no one’s slipping and sliding.
