Now, let’s dive into choosing outfits for family photos!

the evolution of family photo fashion

Okay, before discussing choosing outfits for family photos, let’s start with a little trip down memory lane. Remember those family photos where everyone wore matching white shirts and jeans? Or maybe you have a picture of your whole family in identical sweaters? If you have been scrolling on Pinterest lately, you probably noticed that the matchy-matchy look is “out” although I will always tell you that these are YOUR photos and you should do what you want).

Many of my clients want elevated and classic photos, so I encourage whites and neutrals to be paired with the setting’s color palette. For example, the parents I worked with in the image below paired their outfits with the nursery decor. I would describe this photo as both soft and classic. I also love it when each family’s personality shines through, and I know this ensemble perfectly represents this family.

seasonal considerations (and deciding whether to to cute vs. timeless)

Once you’ve got to coordinate your outfits, let’s let’s see how they affect your family photo outfits. I know – that pumpkin outfit for your little one is SUPER cute, and those matching Christmas pajamas are adorable. And I won’t tell you if your family wants that! But let’s talk about this for a second.

When we capture family portraits, I want you to enjoy them for years. That means having photos that look great on your walls no matter the time of year. So, while seasonal outfits can be fun for holiday cards or social media posts, you might want to consider something more timeless for your main family photo outfits.

Don’t worry, though – we can incorporate seasonal elements in other ways! Maybe we’ll use pumpkins as props in the fall or find a beautiful blooming tree in the spring. That way, you get the best of both worlds – seasonal flair and family photo outfits you’ll wear all year round!

choosing formal and casual options for family photo outfits

While we’re subject, I want to tell you a little secret: you don’t stick to just one set of outfits for your family photos! It’s hard for families to bring along two looks- formal and casual.

This is a great way to get variety in your family photo outfits. Maybe start with a dressier look for classic portraits, then change into something more relaxed for fun, candid shots. It’ll fit like getting two photo sessions in one!

Plus, this gives you options when it comes to displaying your photos. That formal shot might be perfect for your living room, while the casual ones could be great for a photo wall in your family room or hallway.

choosing coordinated outfits for family photos when you have a big family

choosing colors that pop (but not too much!)

Alright, let’s look next. Many families get stuck choosing outfits for family photos but don’t worry. I’ve got tips to make it easier!

First off, think about your home decor. You want these photos to look great on your walls. So consider the colors you already have in your home when planning your family photo outfits. If your living room is all warm, earthy tones, you might want to stick with that palette. With that in mind, though, that doesn’t mean everyone must wear brown! Instead, think about coordinating colors. Maybe mom wears a rust-colored dress and dad’s navy shirt, and the kids are in various shades of cream or tan. The goal is to look coordinated, unlike you all wearing uniforms.

And here’s a bonus tip for your family photo outfits: avoid super bright colors or busy patterns. They can be distracting in photos and might not age well. Instead, opt for more neutral colors with maybe one or two pops of color. Trust me, it will look fantastic!

comfort is key!

Here’s what might surprise you: the most important thing about your outfits for family photos isn’t their look—it’s how they make you feel. If you’re comfortable in your clothes, it will show in the pictures. That counts for your kids, too! A scratchy sweater or too-tight shoes can quickly turn a fun photo session into a meltdown!

Lastly, don’t worry about the weather. Light, breathable fabrics are your friend if we shoot outdoors in the summer. We’ll wear layers for fall or winter sessions – they look great in photos and keep everyone comfortable.
