It is the first question I get after a family books, usually within about ten minutes: “Okay, but what do we wear?” Outfit stress before holiday photos is real, and if you have ever stood in front of a closet at 9 pm the night before a session wondering if the green sweater is too green, you are in good company. Here is my honest take on what to wear for your Santa mini sessions in Nashville, TN, and I promise it is simpler than the internet (aka Pinterest) makes it sound.

Keep It Simple: The Best Outfit Approach for Santa Photos

Before we get to specific outfits, here are the three things I tell every family:

Coordinate, do not match. You do not need five people in identical red plaid. Pick two or three colors that live happily next to each other and let everyone wear their own version of that palette. It looks intentional without looking like a uniform.

Colors that cast onto skin. I want to add one more layer to this, because it is the thing most families never think about. Strong colors reflect. If you land on a specific Christmas red, that red can throw a very red cast onto everyone’s faces in an indoor studio, and it hits different skin tones differently. So before you commit to a color, think about your family’s undertones and how that shade will actually sit against your skin.

And if you have no idea what your undertones are, here is a trick I love: upload a photo of yourself to ChatGPT and ask for a color analysis. It will tell you. Yes, really. It takes about thirty seconds, and it makes outfit planning so much easier.

Comfort comes before perfection. A scratchy collar or stiff waistband will show up on your child’s face in every single frame. If it itches, it is not the one. And whenever children are uncomfortable in outfits, from my experience, there will be a lot of tears.

Let your kids feel like themselves. If your daughter wants to wear her favorite dress and twirl, let her twirl. If your son will not take off his cowboy boots, the boots are part of the story. Some of my favorite Santa photos happen when a kid feels completely comfortable in what they have on.

Want a specific photo in a specific outfit? Pack a second option and bring it along. Just remember your session is 15 minutes total, and that includes Santa time. I have had families bring two outfits, and we have pulled it off; we simply have to be intentional. Have the second outfit ready to grab, keep it easy to change into, and give me a heads up beforehand so I can plan our time around it.

Christmas Pajamas

Classic for a reason. Matching or coordinating pajamas are cozy, kids love them, and they photograph so sweetly in a soft, light-filled studio. Look for solid colors, small prints, or simple stripes over loud graphics.

Classic Holiday Dresses

A velvet dress, a simple red or cream dress, a little bit of texture. Dresses with movement are wonderful because kids naturally spin and swish, and that motion reads as pure joy in a photo.

Jeans and Sweaters

The easiest option and one that almost every family already owns. A cream or oatmeal sweater with dark denim looks polished without anyone having to buy something new. Bonus: your kids will actually keep it on.

Coordinating Neutrals

This is my personal favorite, and I will happily accept the beige woman label. Creams, whites, oatmeal, soft taupe, warm ivory. They look beautiful against every skin tone, they never fight with the studio, and they keep the focus on your family’s faces instead of on the fabric. Neutrals age well too, which matters when this photo hangs on your wall for the next ten Christmases.

Texture Instead of Pattern

If a neutral palette feels too plain to you, add interest with texture rather than print. Cable knit, corduroy, velvet, a little ruffle. It gives the images depth while keeping everything calm.

What to Avoid Wearing to Santa Mini Sessions

None of this is a rule, and I have never once turned a family away over an outfit. These are just the things I would gently steer you away from:

Big logos and graphics. A large character or brand across the chest pulls the eye straight to it, and it dates the photo fast.

Neon and highly saturated brights. Strong neons bounce color onto skin in an indoor studio, which can leave a green or hot pink cast on faces.

Anything that distracts. If the outfit is the loudest thing in the frame, it is competing with your kids. You want to look back and see their faces first.

Formal outfits that restrict movement. Stiff suits and dresses that are hard to sit down in make it tough for little ones to relax with Santa. Movement matters more than formality here.

What Should Parents Wear in the Santa Photos?

Please get in the photo. I mean it. Your kids will want to see you in these images someday, and Santa Scott is very happy to have grownups on the bench too.

For mom and dad, keep it simple:

• Choose solid colors that pull from the same palette as your kids
• Add a layer, like a cardigan, blazer, or jacket, for a little dimension
• Skip matching your children exactly. Complement with their outfits instead!
• Wear something you feel good in, because you will feel it in your posture and it always shows

Plan Your Outfits 2 to 3 Weeks Ahead

This is the tip I want you to actually write down. Plan your outfits at least two to three weeks before your session date.

Not the night before. Not during a frantic 8 pm Target run while everyone is melting down. Give yourself enough runway that if something needs to be ordered, it can arrive and you can try it on, and if it does not fit or the color is off in person, you have time to swap it.

Two to three weeks of lead time turns outfit planning from a stressor into a fun little project.
