How to Prepare Kids (and Partners!) for a Family Photo Session

Family

As a mom and a Nashville family photographer, I get it! Wrangling everyone for a family photo session can feel like a lot. You want beautiful images that reflect your family’s connection, but you also want to survive the day without a meltdown (yours or the kids’).

Here’s the good news: when you work with me, the pressure isn’t on you to make it perfect. I’ve designed my sessions to feel relaxed, joy-filled, and stress-free (yes, even with toddlers, unsure partners, or snack emergencies). You don’t have to have it all together. You just have to show up.

That said, a little preparation can go a long way in helping your family feel comfortable and confident. So if you’re wondering how to prep your kids (and your partner) for your upcoming family photo session, I’ve got you.

Let’s talk through what actually helps and what you can let go of to enjoy your session to the fullest. When you’re ready to schedule your photo session, contact me to learn more! I’d love to chat about bringing your memories to life.

Realistic Tips for Avoiding Meltdowns During Your Family Photo Sessions

There’s no magic formula to prevent every meltdown, but these small steps can set your session up for success:

  • Feed them first: A full belly goes a long way. Make sure everyone eats before your session, even if it’s just a snack.
  • Don’t skip nap time: If you’ve got a little one, try to schedule your session after a nap, not during it. I can also help you plan the timing based on your usual routine so your child is at their happiest.
  • Bring backup snacks: Think non-messy options like puffs, fruit snacks, or Cheerios. These little incentives can be great for in-between moments and help avoid any hangry participants.
  • Skip the scratchy clothes: If your child is tugging at their outfit or fidgeting because of a tight waistband, it’ll show in the photos. Choose something comfy that still feels special. In fact, I don’t recommend trying any brand-new outfits for your family photo session, unless they’ve worn them before.

Bonus tip: Bring their favorite small toy or lovey if it helps them feel secure. I’ve had many a stuffed animal make a quick cameo and save the day, and it just makes your photos that much more special!

What to Tell Your Kids Before a Family Photo Session

Regardless of their age, it always helps to let kids know what to expect. Just keep it light–you don’t need to give a full rundown or stress about “smiling nicely.” In fact, the less pressure, the better.

Try something like:

“We’re going to meet Miss Dolly, and she’s going to take pictures while we play and snuggle. It’ll be fun!”

Also, I have found that the earlier you start communicating with your little ones, the better the session goes (meaning, don’t spring it on them the day of)! If you know your little one needs ample time to process and prepare for their session, talk about it! Talk about what they will wear, talk about where the session will be, talk about what will happen AFTER the session!

Can you think of some incentives for your children for AFTER the session? Perhaps you can take them to their favorite ice cream shop after the session, or is there a movie they have been wanting to see? You know your kids’ personalities the best, so you can gauge and see what would be most appropriate for their age.

Most of all, let them know there’s no test to pass. They don’t need to be perfect or sit still. When kids are free to be themselves, their personalities shine, and that’s when we get the magic.

Posing Games or Prompts to Try With the Kids

I don’t expect kids to stand still and say “cheese” for the entire session. In fact, I hope they don’t! I guide families through fun, interactive prompts that let your real connection come through.

Some of my go-to games and cues include:

  • Running races (with or without mom and dad)
  • Running circles around mom & dad
  • Snuggle piles on a blanket
  • “Whisper your favorite animal in Mom’s ear”
  • Shoulder rides or airplane arms
  • Tickles, nose kisses, and quiet cuddle time

I read the room and adjust based on your child’s age, mood, and energy level. The goal is never a perfect pose—it’s to capture your family’s joy.

Managing Expectations for Your Family Photo Session

I’ll say it louder for the parents in the back: wiggly is normal.

It’s okay if your toddler runs in circles. It’s okay if your baby doesn’t nap on schedule. It’s okay if your kids are more interested in picking grass than looking at the camera. That doesn’t mean your session is a failure.

Some of my favorite images come from in-between, candid moments. A child climbing into their mama’s lap. A sibling reaching for a hand. A shared laugh when something silly happens. These are the photos that feel like your family, and those are the ones you’ll treasure.

When you try too hard to control every shot, you can end up with photos that look too stiff or forced. Trust me, I’ve got this. Your expectation is to relax and enjoy.

How to Prepare Your Partner (Gently) for a Great Session

I know many moms are the ones who schedule the sessions, pick the outfits, and manage all the logistics. And sometimes, your partner is along for the ride (with a slightly skeptical expression).

If your partner is feeling unsure about being in front of the camera, a little reassurance can go a long way. Let them know that the session won’t be stiff or awkward, and this isn’t a “stand there and smile” kind of experience.

I guide everything from start to finish, so it feels natural and easy. It can also help to share why these photos matter to you. They aren’t just for a holiday card; they’re part of your family’s legacy. One day, your kids will look back at these images and see the love that held them together. And finally, remind your partner that they don’t need to know how to pose or perform. That’s what I’m here for. From the moment you arrive, I’ve got it covered.

Most dads end up telling me afterward, “That was actually kind of fun.” And I take that as the highest compliment.

My Approach to Making It Easy (Yes, Even for You, Mom)

I know you’re doing so much just to get everyone out the door. That’s why my job is to take everything else off your plate.

Here’s what working with me looks like:

  • Before your session, I’ll send a detailed prep guide, tips for what to wear, and help you choose the best time and location.
  • During the session, I’ll lead the flow, help kids engage, adjust to your family’s energy, and guide you through prompts that feel natural.
  • After the session, you’ll receive a beautiful, professionally edited gallery to choose from—no guesswork or stress.

You don’t need to come with Pinterest poses or perfectly coordinated outfits. You just need to come as you are.

What If It Doesn’t Go “Perfectly”? (Spoiler: It Still Will)

Here’s a little secret: no session goes exactly as planned.

Someone might trip. A snack meltdown might happen. A shirt might get wrinkled in the car seat. That’s real life, and that’s okay.

What does happen every time? Moments of real connection. Laughs. Tenderness. Little glimpses of your family’s love, captured in a way that lasts.

Years from now, when you look at these photos, you won’t remember the wrinkled collar or the missed nap. You’ll remember the feeling of holding your child close, the way their hand fit in yours, and how much love surrounded you in that moment.

Final Thoughts: Trust Your Photographer (and Take a Breath)

If you’re reading this, chances are you care deeply about your family photos—and that tells me everything I need to know about the kind of parent you are. You want to remember this season, even if it’s messy and loud and unpredictable.

That’s why you hire someone like me. I’ll make the process smooth. I’ll help your family feel at ease. And I’ll create a gallery of images that tells your story beautifully.

You did the hard part just by booking the session. Now take a deep breath, mama. I’ve got the rest!
