When we think about family milestones, we often think of birthdays, anniversaries, and engagements, but there are so many more moments that are perfect for our photo session. I usually take photos of younger families, but I love it when parents want to capture some sweet memories with their older kids as well.
Just recently, I had an amazing photo session with a beautiful family at the historic Belle Meade Plantation so they could capture some memories together before their son left for college. It was a sunny fall day–perfect to shoot mom, dad, their two daughters, and their son together–and the plantation even had some pumpkins out for a cute touch of autumn!
The venue was perfect for a variety of backgrounds, and we ended up with a ton of family and individual portraits to choose from. Take a look at some of the photos below and hear more about our experience so you can start planning your own family photo session at the Belle Meade Plantation!
Whether you have a milestone coming up or not, it’s never a bad time to commemorate your family. Visit my about page to learn more, or contact me today to book your session.
When the kids go off to college, it can be hard for everyone! Parents’ lives change as they shift into empty-nesters, and the kids may not always admit it, but they’re also missing home. A family session is a great way to make sure everyone has photos at home to make them smile as they head off in different directions.
As I took photos of the family, I could tell that everyone was just happy to be together. Mom and Dad were excited for their son to head off, and the younger sisters were just as supportive and proud. The kids were so respectful and fun to be around, which really came through in their photos!
I could tell this family had so much love for each other, which also came out in some fun candids. It’s such a great reminder to just be yourself whenever you have a photo session so you can end up with photos that show your real emotions and the fun interactions you have when you’re just hanging out together. If you’re wondering whether candids or posed photos are best for your family shoot, the answer is both!
The Belle Meade Historic Site and Winery sits on over 5,000 acres in Nashville, Tennessee. It includes several buildings, a restaurant, and a winery that makes it great for tours, wine tastings, and events. The size and variety of options on the grounds also make it perfect for photo shoots!
As I shot the family, we had so much to choose from, including the mansion, gardens, and the rustic stables. Plus, every single spot was picturesque! We were truly spoiled with our shooting location.
Much of the Belle Meade’s architecture is historic and well-preserved, offering a unique and timeless charm for photos. Plus, with all of the different tours available and so much space on the grounds, it never felt crowded.
To make sure you have as much space as possible, I still recommend booking time for your family photo session on a weekday just to avoid the busier weekend days. Having as much open space will give you more options for photo backgrounds and greater variety overall throughout your shoot.
Whenever I’m conducting a family session, I want the setting to be picturesque (of course!), timeless (so they can always look back at the photos and love them, unique (so the photos are memorable), and convenient (I don’t want my families walking too far or struggling to find a good area where we can shoot).
I can honestly say that the Belle Meade Plantation ticks every one of those boxes! The buildings and grounds are very well maintained, so it isn’t hard to find a suitable spot for photos, no matter where you are. The setting also feels both rustic and modern, making for unique and memorable backgrounds. And the grounds are definitely picturesque, with the winery, gardens, and many other outdoor locations to shoot at.
What’s even better is that the venue is super accessible for photos–no photography permit is required, so the cost to shoot is your family’s admission. If you’re looking for a unique, historic, and beautiful location for your family session, you really don’t need to look any further. Plus, I’ll work with you to make sure you’re booked properly for the space and that we have enough time to get every photo you want without any stress.
Feeling inspired? This family session was a great reminder that any family milestone is a great opportunity for updated portraits and photos together. If you’re ready for a session at Belle Meade Plantation, I’ll help you every step of the way!
My family sessions always start with planning so you’re fully prepared for the session day. I can guide you through how to choose the perfect outfits for your photos and how to prepare younger children for family photos so the session is as successful and stress-free as possible. Before your session, I’ll also send over a checklist of items to bring.
Once we’re at the venue, we’ll work together to pick the best spots for you and your loved ones. I don’t want stiff, uncomfortable photos for any of my clients, so I’ll make sure everyone is feeling excited and confident. During your family session, all you have to do is enjoy the beautiful views of the Belle Meade Plantation and have fun with your family!
