When to Take Maternity Photos for Beautiful, Timeless Images

Maternity

When you’re expecting, every week feels like a new chapter in a story that deserves to be remembered. One of the most common questions I’m asked is when to take maternity photos. The answer can make a big difference in how you look, how you feel, and how you remember this season of anticipation and love.

Hi, I’m Dolly, a Nashville newborn and family photographer who believes maternity photos are so much more than a pretty picture. They’re a celebration of connection, patience, and hope.

If you’re ready to capture this moment in your motherhood journey, click here to explore my maternity and newborn offerings or reserve your session. I can’t wait to guide you, help you feel confident in front of the camera, and create images that remind you how radiant and powerful you are.

Why Timing Matters: When to Take Maternity Photos

It’s easy to assume maternity photos are all about the bump. The truth is, timing plays a role in comfort, energy, flexibility, and expression. Your belly grows quickly during the third trimester. The right window ensures it’s beautifully round and visible without pushing you into the more uncomfortable weeks of late pregnancy.

Sessions scheduled at the right time also allow for intentional planning. That means choosing between studio and outdoor locations. Coordinating hair and makeup, selecting outfits from my client wardrobe, and scheduling newborn photography afterward if you want a seamless storytelling experience.

When to Take Maternity Photos: The Sweet Spot Between Weeks 28 and 34

For most mamas, the ideal time for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks. During this window, the bump has a lovely shape, movement still feels comfortable, and swelling hasn’t usually peaked. You can sit, stand, walk, or snuggle without feeling rushed or overly tired.

This window also lets us lean into storytelling. Whether that’s soft movement in studio light or playful walks through a field at golden hour. It’s the point in pregnancy where energy and comfort meet anticipation, which photographs beautifully.

Factors That May Shift Your Timeline

Every pregnancy is different, so the best timeline isn’t one-size-fits-all. You might want to schedule earlier or later, depending on a few important factors:

First-time moms vs. experienced moms
First-time bumps often show more slowly, which can push sessions into the 32-34 week range. On the second or third time, bumps tend to appear earlier, so scheduling on the earlier side can yield better results.

Carrying multiples
Twins and triplets often call for earlier sessions, sometimes between 24 and 28 weeks. Comfort and mobility change more quickly in these pregnancies, making early planning essential.

High-risk pregnancies
If your pregnancy requires additional precautions, scheduling earlier provides flexibility and peace of mind.

Travel, weather, and seasons
Outdoor maternity sessions in Nashville look different in summer than in autumn. Planning around humidity, foliage, or light can enhance the storytelling, especially when we pair maternity sessions with newborn or future family photographs in the same season.

Early vs. Late Maternity Photos: Pros and Cons

It can be helpful to compare the benefits of early vs. late sessions when deciding when to take maternity photos.

Earlier maternity photos:
Pros: Comfortable movement, smaller chance of swelling, more flexibility with rescheduling
Cons: Bump may not be as defined for some mamas

Later maternity photos:
Pros: Beautifully pronounced belly and emotional anticipation
Cons: More swelling, increased fatigue, and less flexibility if the baby arrives early

There isn’t a wrong choice, just what fits your journey and preferences!

When to Take Maternity Photos if You’re Already Past the Ideal Window

If the baby’s due date is close and you’re reading this thinking it’s too late, take a breath. It’s not. Some of my most breathtaking maternity photos have been last-minute sessions. The anticipation in the final weeks can be incredibly raw and beautiful.

The goal is to celebrate connection, not perfection. Whether you’re 29 weeks or 39, you deserve to remember what this season felt like.

Planning Ahead: When to Book Your Maternity Photographer

Once you decide when to take maternity photos, the next question becomes when to actually book. I recommend reserving your session in the second trimester so you have first pick of dates, wardrobe, and hair and makeup availability.

Booking early also gives families time to plan for newborn photography afterward or to invest in a grow-with-me package that covers milestones from newborn through first birthday. I created the grow with me package because documenting your baby’s first year is another beautiful way to document how quickly they change without committing to multiple full sessions.

When to Take Maternity Photos for Studio vs. Outdoor Sessions

Studio maternity sessions provide comfort and control over the environment, which can extend the ideal window slightly longer. With hair and makeup provided and my client wardrobe on hand, many mamas feel pampered, supported, and confident.

Outdoor maternity sessions are more weather- and light-dependent, so timing is often best slightly earlier, with a backup date if needed. Nashville sunsets in late spring and fall are especially dreamy.

Why Timing Makes You Feel Comfortable and Connected

Choosing the right time isn’t just about how you look; it’s about how you feel. When you’re comfortable, you’re free to focus on your partner, your baby, and the joy of becoming a mother. That connection is what you’ll want to remember years from now.

Bonus: Combine Maternity and Newborn for a Full Story

If you’re wondering when to take maternity photos to document more than one chapter. Pairing maternity and newborn photography tells a complete, heartfelt story. Families who choose Grow With Me Collections or Milestone Sessions can create a cohesive narrative. From bump through baby’s first year, and those images only grow more meaningful as time passes.

Your Story Deserves to Be Remembered

Choosing when to take maternity photos isn’t about rigid rules, it’s about honoring this fleeting season. Whether you want a golden field at sunset or a cozy studio moment with hair, makeup, and wardrobe created for you. The most important part is that you feel beautiful, connected, and grounded in your journey into motherhood.
