As a Nashville-based family photographer, I’ve captured countless precious moments for families over the years. As I approached my 40th birthday, I decided it was time for a different kind of adventure—one that would take me back to a story that has been close to my heart for over two decades: Anne of Green Gables. Instead, this trip ended up leading to some of the most meaningful family photos on Prince Edward Island, blending my professional passion with my personal dreams.

First, a story of how I ended up in Prince Edward Island for these precious family photos. It all started over 20 years ago when my best friend, Lindsay, introduced me to the world of Anne Shirley. Little did I know that this red-headed, freckle-faced girl from Prince Edward Island would become a significant part of my life. The stories have been a constant source of joy, inspiration, and comfort through the years.
So, when it came time to plan my big 40th birthday celebration, there was really only one place that felt right – Prince Edward Island. Finally, Lindsay and I and a group of our girlfriends packed our bags. We set off to live our best Anne of Green Gables lives!
As excited as I was to explore the rolling hills and red sand beaches of PEI, the photographer in me couldn’t resist the urge to capture some of the island’s beauty through my lens. On a whim, I decided to see if I could find a local family to photograph during our trip. Little did I know this idea would lead to one of the most meaningful experiences of my career.
Thanks to the power of connection, I was put in touch with the MacDonald family. Ashley and Seoras, along with their daughter Flora, agreed to meet me for a session, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled!
When I first spoke with Ashley and Seoras, I learned that their story was one of both incredible joy and heart-wrenching loss. Their son, Jude, had passed away after a brave battle with cancer a few years ago. The last professional family photos they had taken were with Jude, and they hadn’t had the heart to schedule a session since his passing.
Learning about Jude and the impact he had on his family and community was profoundly moving. Despite his short life, Jude touched many hearts with his bright spirit and infectious smile. As I prepared for the session with Ashley, Seoras, and Flora, I felt an overwhelming sense of responsibility to honor their family’s journey and create images that would celebrate their love and resilience.
The day of our Prince Edward Island family session couldn’t have been more perfect. The sky was overcast, creating a soft, diffused light that any photographer would dream of. As Flora stepped out in her adorable outfit, I couldn’t help but smile. She had that unmistakable Anne of Green Gables vibe about her!
We explored some of the island’s most picturesque spots, from the lush landscape to a stunning beach (with beautiful red sand PEI is known for!). The overcast weather added a lovely, moody quality to the photos, enhancing the island’s natural beauty. Flora’s infectious giggles and curious nature made for some truly delightful moments.
Throughout the session, I was struck by the deep love and connection between Ashley, Seoras, and Flora. There were moments of pure joy as Flora twirled in the fields, and quieter, more reflective moments that seemed to hold the memory of Jude close.
As a family photographer, my goal is always to capture the true essence of a family: their love, quirks, and unique bond. With the MacDonalds, I felt an added layer of responsibility. I wanted to create images that celebrated their present and honored their past.
On the day of their session, the overcast weather was a photographer’s dream. It truly blessed us with soft, flattering light that enhanced every shot. As we moved from the lush green fields to the beach, each location seemed to offer its own unique charm. These varied backdrops beautifully complemented the family’s natural interactions, allowing their genuine connections to shine through in every frame.
Finally, I’m grateful as I reflect on this milestone birthday and the incredible journey to Prince Edward Island. I’m thankful for the opportunity to connect with families like the MacDonalds, whose strength and love remind us of what truly matters in life. Turning 40 might make me “old” in years, but this trip reminded me that there’s always room for wonder, new experiences, and meaningful connections in our lives.
To Ashley, Seoras, and Flora – thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to be part of your story, even for a brief moment. Your love and strength are truly inspiring. I hope these images bring you joy and comfort for years to come.
Lastly, as I return to my life and work in Nashville, I carry with me the magic of Prince Edward Island and the profound impact of the MacDonald family’s story. It’s experiences like these that remind me why I fell in love with photography in the first place: the ability to freeze moments in time, tell stories, and connect with people in meaningful ways.
Here’s to new adventures, old friends, and the stories that shape us. I may plan another trip to Prince Edward Island for my 50th birthday! Or even better, another lovely family will book me for their own Prince Edward Island family photos! After all, there’s always another beautiful moment waiting to be captured, whether in Nashville or on the charming shores of PEI! Click here to book your family photo session!
