Nashville Family Photo Session at Home to Celebrate Newborn

Family

Especially if you have a newborn or a young baby, you don’t want to add any more chaos in your life! The idea of a family photo session can sound daunting, but an at-home session might be just what you need.

I got to capture this sweet family in Nashville recently–mom, dad, baby, and their two beloved dogs Cash and Dolly! The home session was cozy, stress-free, and helped me capture the sweet, typical moments that happen organically.

What was extra special about this family session was that it was a gift from the mom’s twin sister! Though this couple lives in Nashville, the sister in San Diego planned the gift for them–what a great way to celebrate family even from afar!

Capturing Everyday Life at Home

For this family photo session, we took a variety of shots around the house. The bedroom was the perfect spot to cozy up together on the bed with the baby, and their two dogs even jumped up to join in! It was such a great example of how you can get amazing, natural family photos at home. You don’t have to worry about anyone (or any pets) looking or feeling awkward because they already feel safe and comfortable.

We also took photos on the couch in the living room and in the nursery in front of the baby’s crib. The dogs came in and out of the photos to be a part of the action, and it was touching to get shots of them being gentle with the new baby.

I also made sure to capture photos of dad and mom alone with their baby to help show that special bond with both of them. Their baby was just having fun, especially when she got to wiggle around on the bed!

Why an At-Home Photo Session is Perfect for Family Photos

An at-home session might be just what you’re looking for if you’ve been wanting to capture your family with beautiful photos. Don’t get me wrong–I love a location photoshoot as well, especially because there are so many breathtaking spots around Nashville, like the Belle Meade Plantation and Cheekwood!

However, location shoots do take a little more prep. Especially if you have little ones or pets who are coming along, you might need to remember to pack toys and snacks. Plus, it may take a little bit for everyone to get used to their surroundings and feel comfortable enough to take photos. In the end, the outcome is always worth it.

But an at-home family photo session can ensure that everyone is comfortable from the start (babies and pets included!). There’s still a little prep–you want to make sure your home is ready to become the background for your photoshoot–but overall, it can feel like just a normal day at home.

Especially for families, it can be even more special to capture those intimate moments that always happen, like snuggles on the couch or a toddler walking through the hallways.

How to Gift a Family Photo Session

What I loved about this latest family photo session was that it was a gift! I know I might be biased, but a family photo shoot is such a wonderful gift that we might not always think of.

Especially if your loved one has had a big milestone (newborn, engagement, graduation, and more!), it can be your way of sending love and congratulations. Otherwise, we don’t always think of capturing those moments ourselves.

Just like with this family, it’s also a great gift if you live far apart. You might not be there to know what they need inside their home or their favorite restaurants, but everyone will appreciate a gifted photoshoot.

If you’re interested in gifting a Nashville family photo session, don’t hesitate to contact me today! I can work with you and your loved one to schedule the session.

Preparing for Your Family Photo Session at Home

Whether you or your loved one is getting ready for a photo session at home, here are my tips to make sure you get photos you’ll cherish forever:

  • Keep it cozy, not perfect – No need to stress about a spotless home—I promise, I’m great at finding the right angles to keep the focus on your beautiful family. A quick tidy-up in the areas where we’ll be shooting is plenty! Think cozy, lived-in, and full of love—not magazine-ready. And I know it’s hard to keep things tidy with a new baby—that is totally okay. You’re doing amazing, and I’m here to capture the joy, not the mess.
  • Coordinate your outfits – I always like to recommend that families coordinate instead of match. That makes it easier on you and makes your photos a little more interesting as well. Try out coordinating colors or similar patterns, but feel free to express yourself!
  • Think about location – We don’t have to shoot throughout your entire home, so think about the locations that make the most sense. You might spend most time in your living room and kitchen or maybe on a back patio. Those are great spots where you’ll feel the most comfortable!
  • Prepare little ones – If you have little ones (or even big kids!) at home, it helps to gently let them know what to expect. I totally get that having someone new in their space can feel a little strange, so giving them a heads-up can go a long way. Let them know it’s just a fun time to snuggle, play, and be with their favorite people—you included!
  • Create a calm space – To help things flow smoothly, it’s helpful to minimize any little distractions before we start. Silencing phones, turning off the TV, or pausing that simmering pot on the stove can really help you stay present. This time is just for you and your family—to slow down and soak in these sweet moments together.
