There’s something incredibly meaningful about extended family photos, especially when loved ones travel from all across the country to spend precious time together. This beautiful Nashville family reunion brought together generations from California, Idaho, South Carolina, and North Carolina, making it a rare opportunity for everyone to be in the same place at the same time. After spending so much time apart, they wanted to celebrate the occasion with updated family photos that everyone could treasure for years to come.

Now let me take you behind the scenes of this wonderful extended family photos session at a beautiful Nashville Airbnb.

Life has a way of scattering families across the country. Careers, marriages, military service, and new opportunities often mean siblings, parents, and grandparents no longer live in the same state.
That was exactly the story with this family.
With loved ones traveling from the West Coast to the East Coast, getting everyone together in one place doesn’t happen very often. They planned an extended stay in Nashville and rented a beautiful Airbnb where everyone could spend quality time together. Since they were already gathering in one location, it was the perfect opportunity to schedule extended family photos.
One thing I loved about this session was knowing these images would become more than photographs. They’ll become keepsakes that remind everyone of this rare time when the entire family was together.
One of the questions I hear often is whether families have to meet me at a specific location.
The answer is absolutely not.
For this session, everyone gathered at a beautiful Airbnb they had rented during their time in Nashville, and it made the perfect setting for their family photos.
Having your extended family photos taken where everyone is already staying makes the experience so much easier, especially for grandparents, toddlers, and large groups. There’s no coordinating multiple vehicles or rushing everyone across town. Instead, everyone can relax, enjoy time together, and simply step outside when it’s time for photos.
I love traveling to homes, vacation rentals, and family properties because those locations often become part of the story. They create a comfortable, familiar setting where families can truly be themselves, making the images feel even more personal and meaningful.

Large family sessions might seem overwhelming, but with a little planning they’re actually some of my favorite sessions to photograph.
For this session, we started with the full family portrait before moving into smaller groupings.
We photographed:
Working through the session this way allows everyone to relax once the large group portraits are finished, and it also gives each family meaningful images of their own.
One of my favorite moments was watching everyone cheer each other on between photographs. There was so much laughter, conversation, and excitement simply because they were finally all together again.

While the large group portraits were important, some of my favorite images came from the quieter interactions throughout the evening.
A grandson smiling beside his grandmother. Cousins laughing together after not seeing each other for months. Parents wrapping their arms around their grown children. Three generations standing side by side.
These little moments are what make extended family photos so meaningful. Years from now, they’ll remember how it felt to be together, not just how everyone looked. Those are the memories I hope every gallery preserves.
One thing this family did beautifully was choosing a color palette instead of matching outfits.
Soft blues, navy, cream, and neutral tones tied everyone together while still allowing each family to express their own style. The variety of textures and subtle patterns kept the overall look timeless without feeling overly coordinated.
When planning extended family photos, I always encourage families to think about coordination instead of matching exactly. The goal is creating a cohesive gallery where every individual still feels like themselves.
There’s something incredibly special about photographing families who don’t often have the chance to be together.
Everyone arrived with stories to tell, hugs to give, and memories to make. The photographs became one small part of a much bigger gathering filled with connection.
It’s always an honor when families trust me to document moments that may only happen every few years. When loved ones are spread across different states, having everyone together at the same time is something worth celebrating and preserving.
These sessions remind me that family photography isn’t only about young children or annual holiday cards.
Sometimes it’s about preserving an entire family’s legacy.
