A Cozy Winter Newborn Session at Home in Nashville TN

Check out this Nashville newborn photography session featuring gorgeous modern decorations in blush, navy, and white for a baby girl’s nursery!

As a Nashville newborn photographer, one of the things I love most about in-home newborn sessions is seeing how a family has prepared for their little one. The nursery, the tiny outfits folded in a drawer, the rocking chair that will hold so many late-night feedings. These details tell a story long before the baby arrives. And when I get to step into a home and photograph a family during those first days with their newborn, it always reminds me why I do this work.

This particular Nashville newborn photography session is one I hold close to my heart. Woody and Kim welcomed their sweet baby girl, Emerson, and invited me into their home to capture those early moments together as a family of three (plus three loyal pups who were not about to be left out of the photos). Their nursery was decorated in the most gorgeous palette of blush, white, and navy, giving every image a modern and timeless feel.

If you have been looking for newborn photo ideas that feel personal, warm, and true to your family, keep scrolling. This session is a beautiful example of what an in-home newborn session in Nashville can look like.

Why I Love In-Home Newborn Sessions in Nashville

There is something sacred about photographing a newborn in the place where their life is just beginning. The nursery your partner painted at midnight. The blanket your mom crocheted during your third trimester. The spot on the couch where you have already spent hours snuggling your baby. These spaces carry so much meaning, and when we photograph your newborn at home, all of that meaning shows up in the images.

I always tell my Nashville families that in-home sessions are perfect for the newborn stage because they remove much of the stress of packing up a day-old baby and driving across town. You are already in your comfort zone. Your baby is surrounded by familiar sounds and smells. And you can relax into the session knowing that everything you need is right there.

For Woody and Kim, their home was the ideal backdrop. Emerson’s nursery, with its blush and navy accents, white furniture, and soft natural light, gave us a clean, modern setting without adding a thing. We moved through the house at the baby’s pace, pausing for feedings and snuggles, and the result was a gallery full of real, relaxed moments.

Blush, White, and Navy: A Modern Nashville Nursery

If you are expecting and still dreaming about your baby’s nursery design, let this session inspire you. Emerson’s room was beautifully put together with a modern blush, white, and navy color scheme that felt polished but still soft and inviting. The crisp white crib, blush wall accents, and navy textiles created a backdrop that photographed like a dream.

One of my favorite newborn photo ideas is to photograph the baby in the nursery, right in the space you spent months preparing for their arrival. Years from now, when that nursery has been converted into a toddler room and eventually a big kid room, these photos will bring you right back to the beginning. You will remember how small she was. How the light came through the window. How the room smelled like fresh paint and lavender lotion.

Nursery details also give your session a sense of place and personality. The books on the shelf, the name sign above the crib, and the stuffed animal that has already become a favorite. I love capturing those small touches because they are part of your baby’s story, too.

Including Your Family Pets in Newborn Photos

One of the sweetest parts of Woody and Kim’s session was the fact that they included all three of their dogs in the family photos. Pets are family too, and I am always happy when my Nashville newborn photography clients want to bring their fur babies into the session.

If you are wondering how to include pets in your newborn session, here are a few tips I share with every family:

First, have someone nearby who can help wrangle the pets when needed. A friend, a family member, or even your partner can take turns holding the leash while the other poses with the baby. Second, let the pets be themselves. Some of the best photos happen when a dog is simply sitting nearby, curious about the new tiny human in the house. Third, schedule pet photos early in the session when everyone (dogs included) still has plenty of energy and patience.

Woody and Kim’s dogs were absolute sweethearts during this session, and having them in the family portraits added so much warmth and personality. Those photos of baby Emerson surrounded by her pups are some of my favorites from the day.

What to Expect During a Nashville In-Home Newborn Session

If you are a first-time parent, you may be wondering what an in-home newborn session actually looks like. Here is a quick overview of what you can expect when you book with me.

Before your session, we will connect to talk about your home, your nursery, and any specific photos you have in mind. I will guide you on outfits, lighting, and how to prepare your space so that you feel confident going into the session. On the day of, I arrive at your home and we start slowly. There is no rush. Newborn sessions are built around the baby’s schedule, so if she needs to eat, sleep, or have a diaper change, we pause and pick back up when she is ready.

We typically move through a few different setups: baby alone in the nursery, snuggly photos with Mom and Dad, family portraits, sibling photos if you have older children, and pet photos if your fur babies are joining in. The whole session usually lasts about two hours, and by the end, you will have a beautiful collection of images that tell the story of your family in this new and precious season.

Tips for Preparing Your Home for Newborn Photos

You do not need a picture-perfect home for an in-home newborn session. I promise. But a few small steps can make a big difference in how your photos turn out.

Start by tidying the main spaces we will use, typically the nursery, the master bedroom, and the living room. Clear off countertops and nightstands. Make the bed with your favorite clean linens. Hang up any laundry that might be draped over chairs (we have all been there in the newborn days). Open the curtains and blinds in rooms with good natural light, because soft window light is the best lighting for newborn photos.

Choose coordinating outfits that feel like you. Soft neutrals, creams, and muted tones photograph beautifully, but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourself. If you want outfit guidance, I send every client a style guide before their session to make the process easy.

Why These First Days Deserve to Be Documented

The newborn stage goes by so quickly. I say this not to put pressure on anyone but because I know from experience, both as a photographer and as a mama, how fast those early weeks fly. One day you are counting tiny fingers and toes, and before you know it, you are celebrating a first birthday.

That is exactly why Nashville newborn photography matters so much to me. These images are not just photos. They are proof of the tender, exhausted, overwhelmingly grateful season your family walked through together. They capture the weight of your baby in your arms, the look on your partner’s face as they hold their child, and the quiet pride of a pet adjusting to the newest member of the family.

For Woody and Kim, this session captured a season of life they will never get back. Emerson will grow and change so quickly, but these photos will always hold the story of her very first days at home, surrounded by love, wrapped in soft blush and navy, and already so adored by her family.

Frequently Asked Questions About Nashville Newborn Photography

When should I book my newborn session?

I recommend booking your newborn session during your second or third trimester. This allows us to get a date on the calendar and plan ahead, even though we know the exact day may shift depending on when your baby arrives. Once your little one is here, we will confirm the final date and time based on how you and your baby are feeling.

How old should my baby be for newborn photos?

The ideal window for an in-home newborn session is within the first two to three weeks after birth. During this time, babies are still very sleepy and curly, which makes for the sweetest poses and the most relaxed sessions. That said, I am happy to photograph babies up to six weeks old as well.

Can I include siblings and pets in my newborn session?

Yes, please do. Siblings and pets are always welcome. Some of the most meaningful photos from newborn sessions include big brothers and sisters meeting the baby, or a family dog curled up nearby. I will guide everyone through the session, so it feels natural and fun, not forced.

What if my house is not “photo-ready”?

Your home does not need to look like a magazine. I look for good natural light, clean surfaces in the rooms we will photograph in, and meaningful spaces like the nursery or your favorite family room. A few simple tweaks go a long way, and I send a prep guide before every session to walk you through it.
