Bozeman Senior Photographer: Hayven’s Senior Session

There are sessions that feel like work, and then there are sessions that feel like coming home. Hayven’s senior session was the second kind.

As a Bozeman native who travels for photography, I get to meet a lot of families from all over the United States, but every once in a while, a session comes along that means something a little different to me personally. Hayven is part of the Bozeman High School Class of 2027, and photographing her senior portraits as a Bozeman, Montana, senior photographer was one of those full-circle moments I will not forget (keep reading to find out why). 

A Bozeman Native Behind the Camera

I grew up right here in Bozeman, Montana (yes, I truly am a native). I went to Emerson Elementary School (before it became the Emerson Cultural Center), experienced all of my awkward preteen years at Chief Joseph Middle School, and graduated from Bozeman High School (class of 2003!!!!), the same school Hayven is getting ready to graduate from. And Hayven’s family has been part of my life since I was a kid. Her mom and her family were in the same church community as my family growing up, and they used to babysit me. They watched me grow up, saw all my annoying and awkward years, and were always kind and encouraging along the way.

So when Hayven’s mom reached out for senior portraits, it was not just another booking. It was a chance to give back to a family that helped shape my childhood and to be trusted to capture this milestone for her daughter. Seriously, I am beyond grateful for this opportunity! And honestly, I was VERY nervous because I primarily photograph families in Nashville, TN (so photographing a senior session TRULY took me out of my comfort zone, but I was up for the creative challenge!)

 

Two Locations, Two Different Sides of Bozeman

We split Hayven’s session across two days and two very different backdrops, and both of them felt true to who she is and where she comes from.

When we were planning, I gave Hayven the choice to do hair and makeup, since that is part of what I usually offer for my Nashville, TN sessions. She wanted to keep it classic and true to her own personality instead, and I really admired that. Not many senior girls come across as both confident and mature the way she does. (Since I am an elder millennial, I say “you go, girl!!!”)

On the first day, we stayed close to home and focused on the mountain range right beside her house, the Bridger Range. There is something about photographing a senior against the mountains she has looked at her whole life. Honestly, there were other mountain ranges too, but, of course, I cannot remember their specific names (we were able to get some of the Crazies in a few shots). Some of my favorite shots from Day One featured the Bridger Mountain Range.

On the second day, we headed to one of Hayven’s favorite spots to hike with her family. It was important to include a location that actually meant something to her, not just a pretty backdrop, but a place she has real memories in. We were nervous about rain, since the weather had been all over the place the entire trip, but it held off, and Hayven rocked her second session in the mountains. There were even some gorgeous wildflowers (like the Indian Paintbrush) to feature in this session, and I was THRILLED we got to include them in Hayven’s session.

A Sweet Connection to Her Sister’s Session

One of my favorite parts of this session was that Hayven’s family dog, Jet, came along for photos, just like he did three years earlier when I photographed her older sister’s senior session. Getting to include Jet in both sisters’ senior portraits, three years apart, is the kind of detail that makes this work so meaningful. It is a small thread that ties their family’s story together, and now I get to be the one who captured both of those chapters.

Also, who does not adore having the family dog in senior portraits? This is a detail I wish more families and more seniors would consider including in their sessions, because it adds so much meaning to the final images.

Why This Session Mattered

Being Hayven’s Bozeman, Montana, senior photographer was not just about creating beautiful images against the Bridger Range or on a favorite family trail. It was about honoring a relationship that started long before I ever picked up a camera. Her family has quite literally shown me kindness since I was a BABY, and now I get to show up for them during one of the biggest milestones of Hayven’s life.
