One of my favorite things about being a family photographer in Nashville is getting to work in such unique, meaningful spaces. My recent session at The Russell, Nashville might be one of my favorites yet. Not only is it Nashville’s #1 boutique hotel, but it also has a powerful story and a heart for giving back. Photographing a sweet family in such a vibrant, intentional space was such a joy!
From the historic architecture to the pops of color and stained glass windows, The Russell gave us the perfect backdrop to document this beautiful season of life. I always aim to create timeless images that tell your story, and when the setting adds to that story, it’s a win all around.
In case you’re new around here, I’m Dolly Delong! Nashville-based family photographer who loves capturing joyful, genuine moments. My goal is to tell your family’s story through timeless images.

Before diving into the session, I want to share what makes The Russell so special.
Located in East Nashville, The Russell is a boutique hotel with a mission. They’ve transformed a 115-year-old church into a stunning space full of character. Even better, every stay supports Nashville’s unhoused community. A portion of each booking goes to local nonprofits providing housing, food, and emergency resources to those in need.
So far, their “Rooms for Rooms” program has given over 100,000 nights of shelter to individuals experiencing homelessness. Isn’t that incredible?
It’s always meaningful when a session happens in a place with purpose. The Russell’s heart for hospitality made this one feel extra special.

From the outside, The Russell, Nashville retains all the charm of its church origins. The red brick exterior, pointed arch windows, and historic details make it a landmark in the neighborhood. Step inside, and you’re greeted with bold design that mixes vintage and contemporary styles in the most playful, artful way.
There are pops of bright color on the furniture, art pieces that feel curated and full of personality. Plus, the most gorgeous stained glass windows that pour light into the space. It’s a photographer’s dream.
We started our session in the lobby, which provided a mix of neutral tones and vibrant accents. The combination created such a dynamic backdrop without distracting from the stars of the show—this sweet family of three. Whether we were capturing candid laughs on a velvet couch or posed portraits with unique lighting fixtures in the background, every corner of the hotel added visual interest while still letting the family shine.
I have to take a moment to talk about The Russell’s stained glass windows. They truly made this session feel next level.
We captured some of my favorite images of the day with the trio standing in front of those tall, colorful windows. The way the light filtered through cast a soft glow over Mom, Dad, and Baby, wrapping them in warmth and highlighting every little detail.
These photos feel sacred. There’s something about the light, the space, and the love this family shares that made those moments feel almost holy. As someone who loves photographing families in a way that honors the beauty and gift of life, this setting could not have been more perfect.

I always aim for a mix of posed and candid images during family photo sessions. Yes, we’ll get that classic “everyone smiling at the camera” shot—but I also want to capture the in-between moments: the way Dad looks at his baby, the giggles shared between Mom and child, the way their hands intertwine naturally when they’re not thinking about the camera.
This session gave us so many of those moments. From playful snuggles on a colorful sofa to quiet moments of Baby looking up at Mom under the warm light of a modern chandelier, there was a rhythm to the session that just flowed. I stepped back often to let the family interact naturally while I documented the love and joy between them.
And of course, we made time for individual shots too. Mom and Baby. Dad and Baby. Each of them holding their little one, totally present in the moment, completely in awe of this new chapter in their lives. Those photos always hit me right in the heart.

One thing I always tell families when planning their session is this: the location should feel like you. Whether that’s a cozy in-home shoot, a bright and airy studio, or a bold boutique hotel like The Russell, Nashville, the setting plays a role in telling your story.
What I loved about this space was that it allowed for both vibrant energy and quiet connection. The design of the hotel added visual interest and personality, while the natural light and thoughtful layout gave us opportunities to slow down and savor the moment.
It’s not about having the “perfect” location, it’s about having a space that lets your love shine.
This session was such a beautiful reminder that family photos don’t have to happen in the same old places. Yes, parks and studios are wonderful, but if you’re looking for something a little different, consider thinking outside the box.
A boutique hotel, a museum, a historic site, or even your favorite coffee shop—there are so many ways to personalize your session and make it feel like you.
And if you’re not sure where to start? That’s what I’m here for. I love helping families choose locations that reflect their personalities, values, and the season of life they’re in. Whether that means soft neutrals or bold color, cozy indoors or breezy outdoor spaces, we’ll find the perfect fit together.

At the end of the day, family photography isn’t about trends or Pinterest poses. It’s about your story. It’s about capturing the way you look at your child. The way your partner makes you laugh. The way your baby reaches for your hand without thinking.
Those are the moments I live to capture. That’s the heart behind every session I photograph.
